Happy Tails!
We love to hear how Heavenly Hearts dogs are doing in their new homes.  If you have a happy tail to tell, please use our "Contact Us" page to let us know!

Hello,

I adopted a dachshund mix from your rescue group (Toto). She is such a muffin! I could talk about her all day, but I won't bore you with details - I will get right to the point! I am getting married in April and I really don't want to give out the typical chocolate favor to my guests. I want to put a donation in to your group that rescued my awesome pooch. I think Alice (aka Toto) would really appreciate that.  (Enjoy the pictures!)

Thanks,

Cathy

Dear Heavenly Hearts,

Our first days with Buster have been awesome!  Today we grilled out and watched the Packer game. Buster laid by us and played with his toys, and when I got up to check on the food, he 'herded' me there and back.  Typical Border Collie.  Buster, Jake and I went on a couple walks during the game, then after we went for a ride.  First we went to Petco. Buster made SO many friends with both the 2 and 4 legged shoppers.    THEN, I was getting some rawhide from the 'self serve' and he jumps up and looks into the display table at all the treats.  From the look on his face you could tell Buster thought this was a Rawhide Smorgasbord!  He also helped himself to a pig’s ear that was in a low container and he wasn't giving it up, walked with it in his mouth to the check out. So many people were smiling at Buster and commenting on what a great dog he was, and saying his name, Buster you're funny.

After our little shopping trip, we went to the lake and took a walk.  It's a 2.25 mile trail around the water  and he loved it.  I took him down by the water to see what he would do, and he went right in, took a drink, and wanted to go in more.  But I want to make sure he's trained to come to me when I call him if he was off the leash before I let him go in more.  At least we know he's not afraid of the water.  It was so much fun & Jake is very happy today.  Right now Buster is snoozing next to me while I type this.  He had a long day! Thanks again,

Dear Heavenly Hearts,

I thought you might like an update on Lizzie. She is doing really well. She is still shy, but she is getting better. She spends more and more time out of her kennel now, and actually gets excited to see us! She seems to really enjoy our walks, and I make sure she get plenty of exercise and outdoor time.  We have been working on heel and sit and she is doing great. She and George (the cat) are doing okay together.  Lizzie pretty much ignores George and George just can't seem to figure out Lizzie. They will lie about a foot or two apart but I think that is about as close as they have gotten. Which is fine.  We did have a problem trying to get Lizzie to do stairs when we first brought her home.  We tried everything, but she just refused!!  Then all of a sudden she decided it was okay to go up the steps so now she is up and down all the time (showing off I think).  I really am happy to have her and am grateful you picked us.  I hope in time she will really trust us and realize it's okay to be a dog to run and play and just relax.  She is a sweetheart and a joy and we just love her.

Kind regards,

Karen and Rob

Dear Heavenly Hearts,

It’s been one week with Shorty and he is just wonderful. We all love him so much. It feels as though he has always been a part of the family.  He goes everywhere with us. He can sense if we are getting ready to leave and waits at the back door for us. He goes on two long walks every day and loves them. He is doing great on the leash. Everyone who meets Shorty just falls in love with him and he has become the talk of the neighborhood. We are working on his big boy attitude towards larger dogs. Poor Percy (the Rottweiler) is now getting bossed around by two Chihuahuas, but he is taking it in stride. I can’t thank you guys enough for the wonderful gift you have given to our family. You took such wonderful care of him and it shows. I just wanted to let you know he is doing great and very much loved by all of us. You can’t help but to smile when you see him. He is truly a very special dog.

Thank You,

Michelle

Dear Heavenly Hearts

Thought you might like a little update on Maggie Mae.  She seems very happy and I think feels secure.  She has found just the "right" spot on the bed to make her nest for the night.  She has been on a couple of car rides.  One of them seemed to result in her being a bit nervous but the other, which was quite long, went well.

She has a happy face, wags her tail a lot, and she follows Barb everywhere.  She recognizes both of our cars as well as our driveway when we return from a leash walk.   Since my work starts very early in the am, Maggie Mae follows me off to bed in the evening.  She is a wonderful companion and like one of you told us about rescues, I think she does try harder.  For the most part, she has quit jumping on the furniture (other than the bed) and had only one inside accident in the first or second day she was with us.   Her hair is filling out and she is quite fluffy.  Our Vet reminded us that we haven't made any headway with Maggie Mae's extra weight but we have trimmed her food portions slightly.   One of the vets, who knows us well, said (to Maggie Mae) "well, you have a good home now.” Maggie Mae is certainly a loved addition to our household

Heavenly Hearts,

Just wanted to let you know that Ozzie and Dane have been getting along pretty well.  They roughhouse in the yard and Dane chases him around so they both get exercise.  They are still establishing the pecking order...but all is well. He has the normal puppy issues, doesn't listen well yet, bites some still.  But he does love to cuddle.  He is adapting well to our schedule and he seems to know this is home.

Thank you so much,
Scott and Sue

Hi Heavenly Hearts,

I just wanted to let you know how well everything is going with Gabby!  She has adjusted well to our home.  Gabby has been such a great addition to our life.  I hope she feels the same way about us. It seems like she has doubled in size since we first met her.  She loves playing with my brother's pug.  They were really funny to watch!  I am looking into puppy classes for us to attend after the holidays.  We are also thinking of putting her in day care once or twice a week.  She is so energetic and so good with other dogs!  We really want to keep her busy and socialized. That's all I have to report for now!  I'll keep you updated!

Happy Holidays!

Take Care,

Erica

Hi Heavenly Hearts,
Just a quick note on Sashe.  We changed her name to Izzie, short for Isabelle, since our other dog is Louie and we know they'll be treated like royalty.  Dog royalty, that is!  They are like two peas in a pod and stick together like glue most of the time.  Izzie knows her name and can sit and come on command.  Potty training is going pretty well.  She has learned how to share with Louie and has picked up on the invisible fence nicely.  We love having her as our new addition to the family! I thought you might enjoy a picture of them together,  Aren't they cute :-)

Have a great day!
~Julie

Dear Heavenly Hearts,

My husband and I adopted our dog Paris (used to be Paisley) from you back in July.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to have us bring Paris into our family.  She is soooo wonderful and a great puppy. Thanks for all of your help!

Dear Heavenly Hearts,

Just a little hello for the Holidays - and a thank you for finding Max (f.k.a. Marble). Our family was worried that this holiday would not be the same because of our recent loss of Sadie - our 12 year old beauty who lost her battle with cancer after two years. However, because of Heavenly Hearts we are blessed with our new love Max who has helped us heal and make this holiday just as joyful. Although our hearts still hold Sadie close - we have found new happiness with our crazy boy. He has been such a fabulous addition - still a puppy in many ways, but very smart and very gentle with our daughter.

We know that his previous foster mom would love to hear that he is doing well. He has finally accepted our home as his own and we believe that he now knows he will not be moved again. He is a permanent part of our family. Thank you so much for his rescue, thus allowing us to find him - it has made all the difference.

With lots of thanks -

Jaki and family

Dear Friends at Heavenly Hearts,

Merry Christmas!!! We realized that this year was Peyton's first Xmas with us and thought fondly of you! It’s hard to believe we didn't have him last year at this time...seems like he's been here forever. He is loving life - his favorite thing is still going to daycare. He loves playing with all of his friends there and is known for jumping the highest! Our vet thinks he is part Bisenji because he has the characteristic bark (roo) and he is extremely athletic. He is built like a greyhound! He is now a solid 40 pounds. He is very slender but very muscular. Over the past 3 months he has turned into the world's BIGGEST baby. I didn't realize how much of a cuddler he would turn out to be. I think his brother and sister have taught him how to be a lap dog. We decided since he is so big and active it is time to sell the condo and buy a house with a big yard and a VERY high fence. We hope all is well with you and your family. We think of you and the rescue often...if there is ever anything we can do for you don't hesitate to ask. I have attached some pictures...but you might not believe your eyes he is so big. Who would have thought?

Happy Holidays - Eric, Linnea, Peyton, CoCo, and NiCo

Dear Heavenly Hearts,
I want to send a special thanks to Heavenly Hearts for all you do and give you a "Lexie" (formerly Getty) update. Lexie was rescued from a high-kill shelter and placed in loving Heavenly Hearts foster homes where she gave birth to a litter of "little dancers." Obviously, her life had been harsh before her rescue. She was a timid frightened dog.

Her early weeks with me were difficult for both of us. Without her puppies to focus on, the trauma caught up with her. She was afraid to leave the corner of the bedroom. I had to carry her outside. She barely ate. An unfamiliar noise or person caused anxiety attacks. With time, patience, and gentle touches,  she began to feel safe.

Several months later, she is a happy, playful dog who loves her many squeak toys, chasing squirrels, five mile walks in the woods, cuddling on my lap, giving kisses, and asserting her beagle will. People who met her in spring can't believe this spunky Lexie with the ever-wagging tail is the same timid dog they first saw. She is still cautious around anything unfamiliar, but warms up quickly. It has been such a joy to see her become a secure, spirited and content dog.
Thanks to everyone at Heavenly Hearts for the support you've given me and all of the many "Lexies" you have given another chance at a good life.  Second chance dogs are the best.

Hello Heavenly Hearts!

Today it is exactly one year that I've been here!

All is well for me and my family. I see other HHR adopted dogs had their names changed after their adoption, but I am still Beau, and will be for life! I gained a few pounds over the last year, now tipping the scales at 69 pounds. I eat Science Diet food and love it! I was at the vet last week for my rabies and distemper shots, and he said I looked great!

I am still the laid back, loveable Labbie I was a year ago. I love people and they all love me. My family tells me they would not trade me for anything! If you want to use any of my pictures on a happy tails web page, feel free to do it. Just let me know so I can see too! Have a grrrrr8 Thanksgiving, and I'll bark at you later.

Love, Beau

Heavenly Hearts,
I adopted Lulu from you almost two years ago.  She is the sweetest, most loving baby in the world!  She likes nothing more than to curl up in my lap and give kisses or cuddle in the big bed!

Thank you Heavenly Hearts for giving me the greatest little love and the joy of my life!!!

Merry Christmas from Lulu and Heidi

Heavenly Hearts:

I wanted to let you know how Walter (f.k.a Rigsby) is doing in his new home. He is the red head in the picture. We adopted him in Oct of 2007, and as soon as he met his 2 doggie sisters, it was as if he had always been a member of our family! They have never growled at each other. Not even once! Our 14 year old, Lucy, is given much respect by Walter. He just understands that she cannot play, and he lets her sniff him up and down. Our 6 year old mutt, Olive, thinks Walter is the cat's meow! Those 2 play and play ... it is the cutest thing! They chase and romp all over the yard. They wrestle in the house. They get silly together and hang out all the time. It is just what I was hoping for!! Our old dog now gets her much needed rest! Walter is the kindest soul with all people. He loves to be pet by our 2, 9 and 10 year old sons, plus any strangers he meets! He kisses the boys all the time and gets so happy when they come into the room. It warms my heart to watch. His beautiful eyes tell us how happy he is.  He will make an EXCELLENT therapy dog down the road. He is a hound, so we are working on digging and trying to escape the fence, but that is to be expected with his breed! Now that he is settled in, we will start obedience class in January. Thank you for helping me find my new baby boy! xoxo

Heavenly Hearts,

Here is an update on nine year old Flower (black Pomeranian adopted 11/22/07).  Flower has been with me for three weeks now and is doing great.  She has diabetes indipidus, a condition that prevents her urine from concentrating, but Flower is thriving.  She has never had an accident.  She is taking chlorothiazide twice a day.  I am certain her medication is working.  She is such a good girl.  She sits, lies down, gives paw, stays on command.  She is a good watch dog and stands guard at the back door.  She barks when she sees a stranger or the doorbell rings.  She is responding to "no" when she barks too much.  Flower doesn't cry when you pick her up under the arms anymore either.  I read her medical records thoroughly and believe this was related to previously noted back pain.  I took the girls for a play date with my friend’s pug, Yoda.  My friend picked Flower up twice under the arms and she was fine.  I started to tell her not to the first time, but was pleasantly surprised that she was comfortable.  The girls are better friends.  Flower has brought out Twinkle Star's personality too.  Now that Twink knows that someone has her back, she’s not afraid to assert her little five pound self.

Thanks so much for everything.

Hello Heavenly Hearts,

Just a quick note to let you know BoJo is doing great.  She has made herself right at home.  She walked right in, went right to Sequoia's toy box and helped herself.  The two dogs play very well together  The morning is crazy with the two dogs playing keep away with the toys and wrestling around.  The dogs spent three hours at the dog park today and BoJo wore out three different dogs.  She loves everyone and everyone should play with her.

Bojo is starting for follow her sister around in flyball practice.  It's a blast watching the two of them.  They just love each other, although Sequoia looks like she thinks BoJo is nuts sometimes :-)  LOTS of competition for Mom's lap!

Another happy tail!

Dear Heavenly Hearts Family,

I thought you might like a little update on the beautiful girl you shared with me two years ago.  Sissy is another of your shelter rescues that has wrapped herself around several hearts.  She’s still not sure that strangers are supposed to be able to pet her but her circle of friends is always greeted with enthusiastic kisses and a tail that wags so hard it turns her around in circles!  Sissy is content to cuddle up on my lap on quiet nights and enjoys the luxury of a feather comforter as much as any creature I've ever seen on those chilly Wisconsin winter mornings but when it's time to go feed horses or mend fence - watch out, Sissy’s ready to go!  She loves to be the director of activities and rounds up her kitties in the house and her Aussie friends at the farm with equal abandon.  When I first got her, I still had my wonderful old guy, Bandit, and with him she was completely respectful and kind.  She always seems to know the best way to approach those she shares her life with and has blossomed into an amazing soul, far too big for her little frame.  Sissy and I attend more than a dozen horse shows each year, where I am either as a staff member or participant and we see hundreds of people at those shows.  Many people recognize me, but only as "Sissy's mommy."  I couldn't ask for better recognition.

Thanks so much to all at Heavenly Hearts for all that you do, and all that you give to your dogs and the people who love them.

Sincerely,

Natalie (& Sissy)

Heavenly Hearts,

I thought I'd drop you a line and let you know how things are going with Daisy.  She's been a real pleasure.  No bad behavior of any kind, and she's as well housebroken as any dog I've ever seen. If she was a problem in that regard with her former owners, it's because she wasn't getting out enough.  She enjoys the house and yard, and as you can see in the attached picture, she still has the ball she brought with her from your house.  She plays with it outside, and won't bring it in the house, nor will she bring her "inside" toys outside.  Often when we have her outside and she's ready to come in the house, she'll hide the ball in the bushes before coming in. She doesn't always remember where she left it, so we have to search through the vegetation for it. She gets along fine with the cats, and they tolerate her.

We consider ourselves fortunate to have found her, and I think she likes it here too.  My wife wanted a lapdog, and Daisy is the ultimate.
It's hard to sit down anywhere (we have to make sure the bathroom door is closed
J) without her jumping onto our laps!

Hi Heavenly Hearts,

Just wanted to write a note to let you know Toby is doing great! He goes to puppy kindergarten once a week, and has made lots of friends. He keeps Daisy really busy, they chase each other all over. He is the cutest little guy! He is doing great with potty training, and is also really good at taking walks on his leash, then getting a bath 'cause he found some

muddy puddles.

We will always miss our first little girl, Anna, that we got from you, but are really in love with Toby, too.

Thanks for all you do for these animals....

 Sincerely, Peggy, Scott and Allison

Hi Heavenly Hearts!

We wanted to wait until Sadie finished her first obedience classes before we contacted you again.  We’ve attached pictures from her graduation.  She was the only rescue in her class, but was “the star of the class,” just like her web page said she would be!  We’re taking the next month off from classes to relax a little.  She’ll be going on her first camping trip next week and we know she’ll love it.  In the fall we’re going to take Rally Classes and then the Canine Companion.

Again, we can’t thank Heavenly Hearts enough for bringing this sweetheart into our lives.

Take care,

Sue

To Heavenly Hearts Rescue,

Our "boys," Benson & Deacon, both came to us from Heavenly Hearts. Can't imagine life without 'em! I attached photos if you'd like to add them to your "Happy Tails" page.

Our little bundle of joy came from Heavenly Hearts almost one year ago. Lady Bug has been the greatest blessing we've ever had in our lives. We both fell in love with her soulful eyes on Petfinder.com and begun corresponding with her foster momma Sharon over email, finding out that Lady Bug was transferred from a kill shelter when her time "ran out." After what seemed like an eternity of emails, we finally were able to meet our Lady Bug.

It was love at first sight for us. She was nervous, but within five minutes she knew she found what she had always been looking for -- a family that would love her forever. On our way home from her foster momma's our car broke down, and Lady Bug was our little trooper, sticking by us the whole way. By the time we <finally> made it home, we couldn't imagine our lives without her!

The past year has been full of endless joy. She has offered us nothing but complete happiness. She is adored by not only her momma and daddy, but also all of her grandparents too! She loves her walks, her snuggle time, her basket full of toys, her little treats, but most of all, to be with her momma and daddy.

We can hardly believe the cruelty of the world that would have allowed our Lady Bug to be killed due to the "overpopulation" of dogs and cats created by humans. Heavenly Hearts is truly Lady Bug's guardian angel. We cannot express how incredibly grateful we are to those who open up their homes to dogs like Lady Bug until they are able to find their place in the world.

We cannot thank Heavenly Hearts nearly enough for bringing Lady Bug into our life, and more importantly, saving hers. She truly completed our little family. Words cannot express what she means to us...her unconditional love, her kisses, her big brown eyes. We are humbled when we realize how much this little dog loves us, and how she would do anything for us.

She is the world to us.

Thank you so much.

Jessica, Scott, & Lady Bug

Heavenly Hearts rescued Zach from a high-kill shelter in Illinois. He was
very skinny and his fur was all matted. We don't know what all he went
through the first years of his life but we do know how thankful we are to
Heavenly Hearts for rescuing him.

And thank you to Jan for fostering him and following up with us after we
thought he was being adopted by someone else. We saw his picture on
Petfinder.com but it said "PENDING" next to his name. I emailed to ask about
him and found out that he was indeed being adopted. But luckily Jan had kept
my email and when that adoption fell through, she emailed to see if we were
still interested. That was a year and a half ago.

We had a few rocky days in the beginning (we were first time dog owners!)
but those days are long gone. He has been through obedience training, goes
to "doggy day care" once a week to play with other dogs, and I take him with
me to visit patients in hospice through VITAS Hospice. Everyone always asks
what kind of dog he is and says how cute he is! He is the BEST dog! We are
so happy and lucky to have him.

Hi Lisa.

I adopted Princess (an all white cockapoo-now known as Zoey).  I had originally applied for a Cockapoo named Sassy, but she was adopted by the family that saw her earlier in the day that we were supposed to see her.  Our original thought was to get a playmate for our puppy Elmo (a bichon/shih tzu).  We needed a dog that didn't shed or shed very little since we are all allergic to dogs and we wanted a dog that needed a home and a family to love.

Elmo was just a little love and with our busy days and the kids going back to school, he seemed lost that we couldn't give him the constant attention that we had all summer long.  Elmo got along great with other dogs in our neighborhood and enjoyed his playdates, but with busy schedules (ours and theirs) it was becoming less frequent.

So....we decided to get Elmo a playmate for Christmas.  We visited Princess/Zoey and instantly fell in love, she was such a playful happy go lucky girl.  She and Elmo got along great.  We picked her up and welcomed her into our family the day after Christmas and everything was great!  She was fairly easy to potty train (although it was determined by our vet that she was abused in her past which made some things more difficult).  When the weather got nice, they loved to play in the backyard.  Unfortunately, Zoey loves to run, so she has to remain on a leash, but a long one!

The late March/early April of last year, Elmo became really sick.  It ended up he had been infected with Blastomycosis (a severe systemic fungal infection).  By the time the vet figured out what it was, it was too late.  Zoey was so completely lost while her best friend was sick.  On his bad days, she would just curl up next to him and give him kisses.  On good days, they would run all over.  The night that Elmo died, it was like Zoey knew what was happening.  She backed off and stayed away so we could "hover" over him.  When he was taking his last breath in my arms, my husband brought Zoey to Elmo and she gave him a kiss as if to say, goodbye my friend and proceeded to go back and curl up in a ball in the corner.

I was devastated.  Elmo always curled up with me at night, never Zoey.  That night she laid by my side and kissed my tears away, she has been by my side ever since.

Zoey was so good to us and to Elmo that I couldn't go on to see her hurting, we quickly adopted another friend for Zoey.  They are now best friends.  Zoey has shown me that no matter what you go through in life, the ones who love you will always be by your side and never leave.  We helped her learn that she was safe and no one was going to hurt her anymore, and she taught us that life goes on.  I always recommend to my friends that are looking for a furry family member to remember those in the rescues and the humane society.  I would adopt another animal from a rescue in a heartbeat.........but my husband said 3 is enough!  Zoey is a constant reminder that no matter what happens in life, as long as you have your family, everything will be ok.

Julie

I included a picture of Elmo and Zoey together (with mom), then one of Zoey 1 month after she came to live with us, and finally our christmas card picture of all 3 puppies under the Christmas tree!  I believe Deb was the lady that was fostering Zoey when we got her.  She was great!

A Big Thank You to Everyone at HH!

A little over a year ago, my wife and I were able to adopt Holly (now renamed Molly), a four month old, four pound Yorkie mix. Molly came into the care of Heavenly Hearts in December of 2005 as a young pup who was born with a malformed kneecap in her rear left leg. Through the kindness of your organization and generosity of others, Molly was able to get the surgery she needed. A few weeks after her surgery, we were able to bring her home.

She favored the operative leg for several months, but that has largely disappeared. She still favors it now and again when we're outside in the cold or when she is running down stairs. (It always makes us chuckle to see her tear down the stairs on three legs!)

She has grown to between 8-9 pounds now, and all we can say is: Wow!  What a wonderful dog she is!

She is so happy-go-lucky, lively, and filled with excitement and love for everyone she meets. In exchange for the boundless love she provides us, we've taken her to a few training classes including one to help her learn how to be a therapy dog. In addition to the classes, we take her to various dog playgroups and drop her off one day a week for doggie daycare, which she loves immensely. She comes home so happy and tired from running and playing with her friends. Sometimes I think she would love it if she lived there!

We love her so much and can't imagine our lives without her!

Thank you so much to Sara, Sharon, and everyone at HH for being so helpful and kind to us and to Molly. Down the road we will be looking to get a companion dog for Molly, and will again look to Heavenly Hearts to help us find just the right dog. In the meantime, we won't hesitate to recommend your organization to anyone we meet who is looking for a dog to enrich their lives.

Best wishes,

George & Rachel

Hi Heavenly Hearts,

Chase (f.k.a. Bear) has been with our family now for a year (since July 17, 2004).  He’s been the star pupil in both of his companion dog training classes, and just last month he earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate.  His new CGC collar tag says “Chase:  Rescue Dog and Good Citizen” and we’re so proud of him.  Chase is going to take his therapy dog test later this month, and then he can practice his natural gift of making people happy.  Whenever we take him into town for a walk, kids just love to pet him and adults can’t stop smiling at him.

Chase‘s best friend is his “sister” Scout (she’s our black lab).  They run and play keep-away in the yard, trot around together holding opposite ends of their rope toy, share their water bowls, snooze with paws crossed over each other, and just generally love each other like siblings would.

As you can probably tell, Chase has been an awesome addition to our family.   Thank you so much for rescuing him from the shelter in time…you saved a real treasure!
